Classical Music Broadcasts on WHYY-TV

Good news for classical music fans!

WHYY-TV is filling the void left by the demise of WFLN-FM.

Unknown to most viewers, all stereo TVs, in addition to the normal audio program, can also receive the SAP (Second Audio Program). TV manufacturers envisioned the SAP to be used to offer various services, including a second language. WHYY is using their SAP to provide 24 hour classical music for their viewing area.

More details and the broadcast schedule are available on the WHYY site.

Please note that this service is broadcast on WHYY-TV, not WHYY-FM, and requires a stereo TV. Most stereo TVs and VCR's allow you to listen to the MAIN (the regular TV program), SAP (WHYY's classical music audio program), or BOTH (simultaneous MAIN and SAP) audio programs. If BOTH is selected, one audio channel (left or right) will play the music and the other channel will play the regular TV sound.

Remember to switch your TV back to MAIN when viewing regular TV programs. Not all TV stations in the Philadelphia area are using their SAP. If you forget to switch back to MAIN while viewing a regular TV program, you may not hear any sound or the sound may not be related to the picture.

Although the SAP is not in stereo and the overall quality of the sound you can expect is not quite up to FM radio standards, many listeners will find the broadcast quality acceptable.
